The
blue period
by
Picasso is a reflection of the artist at the time, this period
took place between 1900 and 1905 and was triggered by the suicide of close
friend Casagemas. Prior to the blue period Picasso painted his subjects in
a ruthless and satirical fashion, often painting cafe scenes, and fanciful
women sipping on absinth. The blue period marked a pivotal point in
Picasso's career, adding depth of emotion to his paintings the artist
began to reach a higher level of art. One of the first paintings to be
painted in this style was "Child with a Dove" painted between 1900 and
1902 which features a young girl with a dove, possibly thoughts of his own
childhood sparked in Picasso's sub consciousness as his father often
painted doves. Regardless, the artist was well aware of the drastic change
in style and began signing his paintings "Picasso" where as in the past he
often signed "Ruiz Picasso".
