Artist Biography

Born in Spain Picasso began to paint at the young age of seven while assisted by his father. Less than a year later he completed his fist oil painting and soon began a life of painting and art. By the age of 11 Picasso began his formal art schooling which lasted until the age of 16 when he contracted scarlet fever and moved to the Spanish country side to recuperate.

As Picasso entered into young adulthood he moved to Paris France where he began to make huge strides in his art, this period is often known as the blue period where he used extensive hues of blues while expressing feelings of depression or gloom.

The blue period was followed by the rose period which focused on brighter colors, and happier times and theme's. During this rose period Picasso met Matisse and the two worked together as well as enjoyed each others company as friends. Matisse died in 1954, Picasso felt alone in the world with the loss of his close friend and partner. The series The Studio At La Californie pays tribute to the friendship and partnership between these two great artists and painters.

Picasso died in Mougins France in 1973
